College or military, that鈥檚 what everyone was doing. That鈥檚 what we were told to do all through鈥� school. When I came鈥� to Rosedale, it was a different type of schooling. Because they are actually interested in what you鈥檙e learning鈥� You鈥檙e not just being forced different subjects upon you. And once a week we are able to get hands-on鈥� do projects out in the facility. Which really gave you a leg up when you went into interviews and they asked you 鈥楴ow do you have any experience?

They will help you with your resume鈥� I think the interview class here鈥� it鈥檚 very valuable. They teach you how to sit down in a professional manner and talk to someone and highlight your skills鈥� If you take that class and you do really well鈥� you are going to have a great-paying job. In a jobs apocalypse, look to 鈥楢I-proof鈥� skilled trades, career experts say

James Vandall, 25, said his interest in becoming an electrician first sparked, so to say, when workers were recently redoing the wiring on the third floor of his home. 鈥淚 asked them how I could go about getting into that trade,鈥� he said. Part of the appeal, he said, was working with his hands. 鈥淚nitially, I really didn鈥檛 know what I wanted to do. I went to college and then left,鈥� he said. 鈥淚 sort of bounced around from job to job throughout the years until I eventually landed on trades.鈥�

In 2024, The Wall Street Journal published an article, 鈥淗ow Gen Z Is Becoming the Toolbelt Generation鈥� (paywall), about students choosing the trades over traditional four-year colleges. There were many reasons, including lower educational costs, less time in the classroom, increased earnings for skilled labor because of skilled-labor shortages and investing in AI-proof professions. I can attest that this trend is real. Enrollment in technical colleges like mine has risen sharply. But many educators and employers are noticing something else: that the toolbelt generation may be missing a few important tools鈥攕pecifically emotional maturity, social skills and accountability.
